Even When No One Sees

Last week, I visited a patient who was nearing the end of life.

As I spoke with his son, I found myself sharing something I’ve felt many times before.

The moment I step out of a patient’s home… everything appears normal again.

Cars pass by.
People go about their day.
Life continues as if nothing is happening.

And sometimes, there’s a part of me that wants to say—

“Do you realize someone is dying in there?”

Or after I pronounce a patient…
when I walk out of the home and into the world again—

there’s an undeniable urge to yell out my car window,
“Somebody just died!”

But of course, I don’t.

And life goes on.

That day, the patient’s son said something that has lingered with me.

He said, “You hospice nurses work in the shadows… but you do amazing work.”

He was so impressed with our hospice team, he wanted to make a donation to our company.

That was a high compliment.

And I thought about how true that is.

So much of what we do is unseen.

The conversations.
The presence.
The quiet moments we hold with patients and families.

Most people will never fully know what happens inside those homes.

But it matters.

Every bit of it matters.

So I want to say this—especially to the new hospice nurse:

Even if it feels like you’re working in the shadows…believe me you’re not.

You are doing deeply important work.
Work that brings comfort, dignity, and peace in someone’s final moments.

You matter more than you realize and don’t ever forget that.

An Affirmation For You

Even when my work is unseen, it is meaningful, valuable, and deeply important.

Self-Care Tip

After a heavy visit or pronouncement, take a moment before driving away.
Place your hand on your heart, take a breath, and acknowledge:
“That moment mattered.”
Let yourself honor what you just witnessed.
